Responsible Travel Week 2015 #rtweek2015

Tlacolula

Tlacoula Market on a Sunday

This year Responsible Travel Week takes place from Feb 9 to Feb 15; so here at the Instituto Cultural Oaxaca, for those responsible travelers, we have decided to create a list of activities to do in Oaxaca.

Oaxaca is famous for its gastronomy. Soon it will be consider the gastronomic capital of Mexico; as a result, we encourage you to visit locals markets to learn about the people that, day-to-day or week-by-week, sell their produce at their local market.

Market days in Oaxaca:

Sunday: Tlacolula

Tuesday: Atzompa and Abastos Market in Oaxaca City

Wednesday: San Pablo Etla

Thursday: Zaachila

Friday: Ocotlán and Organic Market at Xochimilco (Pochimilco)

Saturday: Organic Market at Xochimilco (Pochimilco) and Abastos Market in Oaxaca City

Another activity, for all of those Responsible Travelers looking to get an experience off the beaten path, we recommend you to join a Microfinance Tour with Fundación En Vía (www.envia.org). En Vía tours are usually conducted Thursdays and Saturdays of every week, or you can join a Sueños de la Tierra Pottery Tour with Innovando la Tradición (http://www.innovandolatradicion.org/tour/).

Another great way to get to know the local Oaxacan culture and its cuisine is by taking a cooking class, and why not take it with a native cook from Teotitlan del Valle, meet Reyna at cookingclasseselsaborzapoteco.blogspot.mx

If you decide to come to Oaxaca for a longer period of time, consider staying with locals; if you study Spanish at the Instituto Cultural Oaxaca, we can help in arranging homestay while studying Spanish in Oaxaca. Even if you are here for a short period of time, this is a great way to meet locals and learn more about the wonderful things Oaxaca has to offer.
